Decoy Country Park, Newton Abbot, Devon

 

For an hour, I stood motionless on the banks of Decoy Lake (former Ball Clay pit), as an audience of passer’s by stopped to look at me.  Wearing a thick covering of Ball Clay over diving apparatus and holding a ‘Ball’ of clay, as though I had just emerged with it from the lake waters, this static performance, signified three interrelated themes; the submerged history of Decoy, as a former ‘Ball Clay’ pit, the working methods used to extract the clay and the pits modern day re-incarnation as a lake for water sports and home to aquatic life.
