Clay Closures: British Ceramic Tile 1850-2019
No bellowing white steam, just blank empty skies and a redundant chimney. British Ceramic Tile shut for good this week. The Newton Abbot based tile company (formerly Candy & Co Ltd) went into administration having lost one of its major UK contracts. For over 165 years, Ball Clay sourced from within a mile of the factory was transformed into a range of tiles glazed bricks and other architectural ceramics. The Devon Ball Clay used to make these products is prized for its plasticity strength and white firing. It is a sad loss for the clay industry and the 313 workers who have been made redundant.
